Outstanding for Corpus Christi Catholic Primary

Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School is proud to announce that it has been judged as ‘OUTSTANDING’ by Ofsted, in every single area, following a recent inspection.

The Catholic primary, based in Bensham Gateshead, has 233 pupils and is part of Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust, which supports five secondary schools, one middle school, one first school and forty-one primary schools in the Hexham and Newcastle Diocese.

Pupils at Corpus Christi are noted for their exceptional behaviour – displaying kindness, respect, and articulately expressing their thoughts and feelings.

Key highlights of the report showcase the school’s leadership, which demonstrates exceptional ambition for all pupils and fosters an environment where children thrive. It also notes the introduction of a highly ambitious curriculum reflecting the school’s commitment to providing students with the ability to understand global issues and articulate their learning effectively.

The report states that lessons at Corpus Christi are not only informative but also engaging, reflecting the expertise of the staff in teaching. The school surpasses expectations in everyday provision for pupils, creating an environment where praise and encouraging language are integral to every conversation.

Corpus Christi is also recognised for excelling in catering to the needs of students with Special Educational Needs (SEND), ensuring they receive the necessary support for success. The Ofsted report specifically acknowledges the outstanding provision for pupils with SEND.

Cheryl Maxwell, Head Teacher, said “We are absolutely thrilled that Ofsted have rated our school as ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. This judgement is a result of the immense skill, commitment and expertise of our hardworking staff, the unwavering support of our parents, governors and trust, alongside the excellent behaviour and hard work of our wonderful children. It confirms that at Corpus Christi, children receive the highest quality of education and care.

“My favourite statement in the report is: Pupils have clear ambitions for the future and believe that the school will help them to achieve their dreams. Alongside delivering an ambitious curriculum, we believe that a huge part of our work is encouraging children to aim high, increase their confidence and self-esteem and prepare for success as adults in modern day Britain.

“This recognition is a testament to the exceptional commitment and skill of our hardworking

staff, the steadfast support of parents, governors, and the Trust, as well as the exemplary

 behaviour and dedication of students.

“Although definitely challenging and rigorous, we felt the Inspectors were respectful, supportive and fair, at all times, during the two-day inspection.

“Despite this successful outcome, we will continue our relentless focus on growth, improvement and development, ensuring the highest expectations and ambition for every child at Corpus Christi.”

Nick Hurn OBE, CEO of BWCET, said: “We are incredibly proud of Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School for achieving an ‘OUTSTANDING’ rating across all areas in the recent Ofsted inspection. This accomplishment underscores our commitment to providing a learning environment where inclusivity and teaching quality are openly fostered.
